Key Networking Tips

Discover what you can do for someone else. It’s about opening up a relationship; not closing a sale.

Become a great connector. Great networkers enjoy connecting people. Again, do something for someone else.

Speak in a conversational tone. Be focused, listen carefully and do not be confrontational.

Remember me? Great networkers say, “Nice to see you,” or “Great to see you,” rather than “Nice to meet you.” The latter can cause issue if the person responds by saying, “We’ve already met.”

Number of business cards. The minimum number of business cards to carry at all times is seven. In that way, if you are seated at a table of eight, you have enough cards for everyone at the table. But, try to remember to bring more. The more the better.

Exchange cards sooner rather than later. The best time to exchange business cards is when you first meet. Make it a natural part of your introduction so there’s none of the anxiety of wondering when  the exchange should happen.

Pick your location. Come early and pick your spot to network. One of the best spots is near the entrance as people arrive. Don’t go to the back of the room and wait for others to come to you. And, don’t only talk to people you know.

A simple smile goes a long way. Start with a smile. You’ll find that you receive an automatic smile back as a response. It opens the door to friendly communication.
